Project Background

Indigenous people, policy makers and their advisors know how they want their situation to change to secure a better future - but they do not always know how to change their situation. Initiatives intended to secure a better future do not always work as intended, and many tragic examples testify to the social and environmental impacts of unforeseen consequences and unintended side effects.

Attempting to develop a model like FLORES will involve a rigorous synthesis of existing knowledge, focus attention on linkages across disciplines and on gaps in present knowledge, and will help to identify additional research needs.

The initial version of FLORES will demonstrate the added value that comes from integrating and co-ordinating research. The framework provided by FLORES will empower researchers to examine their own work in a broader context, and should foster collaboration and integration of on-going work.

The workshop will begin to calibrate FLORES for the Jambi area. When this is completed, NGOs will be able to examine the consequences of various initiatives, and to explore possible alternatives.

FLORES will provide the ability to explore alternative scenarios (i.e.: "what will happen if we do this ..") but it is likely that it may take up to two years for it to be reliably formulated and calibrated, even for the case study. However, it will deliver immediate benefits through synthesis of existing knowledge, fostering collaboration and co-ordination of research, identifying of gaps in existing knowledge, and highlighting research needs.

Intended Outputs

  • FLORES, constructed through participatory process, calibrated for Jambi, Sumatra.
  • User manual, with documented case study, to assist users and illustrate applications.
  • Documentation and reference material to assist in understanding the model and its development.
  • Peer group enthusiastic to continue development of FLORES to assist its calibration in other places, and to involve others.
