A. Objectif de l'action envisagée : - Objectives :
General: to maximise the socio-economic and environmental benefits of the sustainable management of primary tropical forests, forest plantations, agroforestry and social forestry programmes; and improve the conservation of primary forests. Specific: to improve the uptake of knowledge on forest tree species in the Asia-Pacific Region leading to improved efficiency of forest management, research and training
B. Description : - Components :
1. Preparation: Compilation of species lists, identification of data sources, refining design of database, writing the software to run the database 2. Data collection, entry and compilation: preparation of data sheets, collection, entry, compilation and bibliography 3. Testing and user manual: testing the database on sample of users, writing the manual 4. Production of CD-ROMs: production of first edition
C. Justification : The output of the Project will be an encyclopedic information resource on species characteristics relevant to the management and use of economically important forest trees of the Asia-Pacific presented on CD-ROM for use on personal computers (chip 486+).
Justification for the Rider: 1. The first two stages of the project as described above are still expected to be completed within the timescale outlined in the proposal, that is by the end of June 1998. However, the CABI considers that the third stage of production of the master CD-ROM and its duplication may extend beyond this deadline. The planned publication date has been revised to September, which allows for a certain margin of delay, and it is proposed that the project completion date be extended to 30 September 1998. 2. The Contractor has had in place a significant fund-raising operation to secure contributions to cover the originally planned project budget of US$ 1 million. To date, contributions totalling US$ 300,000 have been secured from: Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Australia $ 50,000 Department for International Development (DfID) United Kingdom $ 100,000 Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ) Germany $ 100,000 MacArthur Foundation USA $ 50,000
A wide range of other organisations have shown great interest in the initiative, but none have been able to commit funds within the time period of the present project. Thus a shortfall remains which it is extremely unlikely to be filled. The Contractor is requesting that the overall contribution from the Commission be increased from Ecu 418,890 including contingencies by an additonal amount of Ecu 83,778. 3. The time extension on the project as described above is not associated with any budget overrun, and the total expenditure on the project is expected to be within the original budget.
D. Modalités d'exécution : This compendium will be undertaken by CABI in association with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and collaborating institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region and elsewhere.
CABI stands for Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International. It is is a treaty-level, international, intergovernmental, non-profit organisation owned and governed by its Member Countries. Its mission is to help improve welfare worldwide throught the dissemination, application and generation of scientific knowledge, with emphasis on agriculture, forestry, human health and the management of natural resources, and with particular attention to the needs of developing countries. The headquarters is in the UK, and there are regional offices in Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), Africa (Nairobi, Kenya) and the Caribbean (Curepe, Trinidad and Tobago).
